As with most things we do this started out as a throw away comment – “wouldn’t it be fun to race bikes on the horse track?” So with low expectations we asked the question and the result from Exhibition Park was an enthusiastic yes. Which raises the next question – “what do we do now?” So we walked and biked the track several times and started to develop the idea of 3 races that would give riders of all abilities an opportunity to race against each other in a fun, traffic free environment. In truth I was not convinced that calling a race the Elimination Race was a great idea. Who wants to do a race that you get eliminated from but it worked out perfectly. The group rode together for 6 or 7 laps at a reasonable pace before riders began to get dropped by the main group. The odd attack helped to thin the peloton and I can honestly I have never seen so may riders happy to be eliminated. It was a rush to ride in this race and great for spectators, a bit of a slow burner but it was very cool to see almost 30 racers on the track at the same time.
The Cyclocross course was created for the beginner cross racer as I knew that the faster guys would simply ride an easier course faster. As it was the grass was long enough to make it tough enough and with a perfectly flat track we needed just a couple of obstacles to make things interesting.
We thoroughly enjoyed organizing this event and we will be back in September 2017 with our 2nd edition of ExCross – thanks to everyone who raced or volunteered.
